VANCOUVER, British Columbia Mike Fisher return to the Predators quickly became a coming-out-of-retirement party.Fisher scored in his first game back and Calle Jarnkrok won it 43 seconds into overtime as Nashville beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 on Friday night for its seventh consecutive victory. The 37-year-old Fisher, who announced his retirement just more than six months ago, changed his mind and decided to come back for an eighth season with the Predators. He returned to practice with the team earlier in February and signed a one-year deal.Article continues below ...They say sometimes rest is a weapon. Well see, Fisher said. I was trying to keep the shifts as short as possible, but it was easy fitting in with my linemates, the team, the way they have been playing and working. It was fun.If rest is indeed a weapon, the Predators seemed intent on using it Friday. They opted to give the night off to four regular players Roman Josi, Craig Smith, Scott Hartnell and Yannick Weber. The victory in their absence showed just how much depth there is in Nashville lineup. We had a couple guys gone today, but we still managed to win the game and we played a great hockey game, Jarnkrok said.Kevin Fiala and Ryan Ellis also had goals for the Predators , who matched their longest winning streak since November 2009. The defending Western Conference champions lead the West by four points over expansion Vegas P.K Subban Jersey.Backup goalie Juuse Saros made 24 saves for Nashville, which holds the top spot in the Central Division.Theyre deep throughout their lineup, said Brandon Sutter, who scored one of Vancouver goals. They have four lines that can score. Their D is probably the strongest D corps in the league. But we stuck with them all night. It was a pretty solid effort for us.Bo Horvat and Daniel Sedin also scored for Vancouver , which is 3-8-3 in its past 14 games. Jacob Markstrom was impressive with 39 saves.Alex Edler, who has played his entire career in Vancouver, had two assists to surpass Mattias Ohlund for most points by a Canucks defenseman with 326.It means a lot to be up there with , Edler said. He was a mentor for me. It was great for me to have him here my first year. How he played on the ice and how he acted off the ice, too. Im very grateful for that.Vancouver scored first while on the power play, off a faceoff in the Predators zone. Edler ripped a shot from the blue line that Horvat tipped in at 555 of the first period. The Canucks made it 2-0 with five minutes remaining in the second as Sutter carried the puck from the side boards into traffic and scored on a backhand. The Predators got on the board minutes later when Fisher swatted in a rolling puck following Filip Forsberg shot. He almost scored again early in the third with a shot from the slot, but hit the post.Nashville tied it midway through the period during a 4-on-4. Fiala fired a hard wrist shot from near the faceoff circle that went into the top corner jumped ahead 3-2 on a power play. Sedin took a pass from twin brother Henrik Sedin and lifted his own rebound for his eighth goal in eight games. The Predators tied it again with just more than two minutes left. Ellis drive from the blue line cleared enough traffic to squeak by Markstrom and force overtime.Jarnkrok won it when he fired a shot from the hash mark that beat Markstrom.NOTES The Canucks shut down winger Loui Eriksson on Thursday for the remainder of the season. Canucks forward Sven Baertschi left early in the second after taking a hard check from Alexei Emelin Mike Fisher Jersey. Baertschi went to the locker room clutching his shoulder and did not return.

PITTSBURGH Sidney Crosby and Phil Kessel came through for the reeling Pittsburgh Penguins. Crosby and Kessel each scored twice and the Penguins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-2 on Saturday night to end a season-high three-game losing streak We needed that win tonight, Kessel said. We needed to find our footing and get a couple wins going. Tonight was a good start.Article continues below ... Tristan Jarry, making his first home start, stopped 33 shots for his first NHL win. He also assisted on the first goal of the game and got the game puck from his teammates. It obviously very special, and it nice to get that out of the way, Jarry said about his first NHL win. It something Ill never forget and it something Ill cherish forever. Pittsburgh hasnt lost four straight in regulation overall since Dec. 14-19, 2015, the first four games of coach Mike Sullivan tenure. The Penguins, playing without injured star forward Evgeni Malkin Jake Guentzel Jersey, also ended a two-game home regulation losing streak. Kessel also had two assists, and Crosby had one, fueling a Penguins offense that scored three power-play goals and added another short-handed. Kessel, with seven goals in his last nine games, scored his team-best 11th. Crosby, who has points in five of his last six, added his ninth. Bryan Rust scored a short-handed goal, his third of the season for the Penguins, who have won 12 of their last 13 home games against Tampa Bay. Pittsburgh scored at least four goals in all 12 wins. I think our players understand the circumstance, Sullivan said. We all know where we stand in the league and our division. Our group has high expectations and I thought tonight was a solid effort from top to bottom. Ondrej Palat scored his seventh on the power play and Cory Conacher his first of the season for Tampa Bay. The Lightning, off to the best start in franchise history, have just five regulation losses, but three have come in the last four games Peter Budaj made 29 saves for Tampa Bay. It too bad for because he played really well for us and we kind of put him in a tough spot, Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. You give up three, five-on-three goals and a , I dont know how many times you can come back from that. Pittsburgh faced Tampa Bay in the second half of a back-to-back for the third time this season. The Penguins, who play a NHL-high 19 sets of back-to-back games, were outscored 12-5 in the first two games against Tampa Bay and 36-12 in six previous winless back-to-back games this season. Jarry helped the Penguins to their first win in a back-to-back situation this season. Jarry stopped Steven Stamkos on a breakaway early in the first period and then helped kill a four-minute double minor with several quality stops Evgeni Malkin Jersey. That allowed Pittsburgh to strike first when Rust beat Budaj on a short-handed breakaway. Kessel and Crosby later changed the game with two power-play goals. The Penguins went on a four-minute power-play and were given a 5-on-3 for a full two minutes after Cedric Paquette was whistled for high sticking and a tripping call on Anton Stralman. Kessel scored on a cross-crease feed from Crosby and the Penguins captain made it 3-0 just 123 later when he tipped a Kessel wrist shot from the point behind Budaj. Kessel scored his second of the game 222 into the second period. He beat Budaj on a breakaway with a sharp wrist shot high and to the blocker side. Sullivan said it the best he ever seen from Kessel during the regular season. His daily habits are so good right now and it translating into game situations, Sullivan said. He such an elite player and he so dangerous when he has the puck. When he playing the game as determined as he is right now, you see how he has the ability to be a difference maker. NOTES Malkin missed his third-straight game with an upper-body injury. He is considered day-to-day. . Lightning F Chris Kunitz returned to Pittsburgh where he spent the previous nine seasons. He is one of five players to win the Stanley Cup three times with the Penguins. . Sullivan tied Scotty Bowman for fourth on the team all-time wins list with 95. Crosby played in his 807th career game, passing Jaromir Jagr for second in team history. Mario Lemieux is first with 915. . Tampa Bay has scored a power-play goal in 19 of 23 games this season, including eight of the last nine. . Lightning D Jake Dotchin is eligible to return Tuesday against Buffalo.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. The NHL's first outdoor game at a U David Perron Jersey.S. service academy probably won't be its last. After the Washington Capitals hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Naval Academy, the league hopes to play games at Army's West Point and the Air Force Academy over the next few years. It's a significant foray into honoring and partnering with branches of the military that follows the lead of the NFL and Major League Baseball for a league that's split between the United States and Canada''It's unique and as we continue to move forward with the outdoor games, you look for new concepts and new themes and new things that'll interest the fans,'' deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Associated Press on Saturday. ''Certainly the hope is, with a successful game , we'll continue the venture with the Army and the Air Force and we'll see where we go from there.'' NHL Young Maple Leafs Overflowing With Cup Potential Capitals Once Had Daly said he'd be surprised if the sequel to Maple Leafs-Capitals at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium comes as soon as the 2018-19 season, though 2019-20 is a possibility. The Florida Panthers faced the New Jersey Devils inside in an exhibition game at West Point's Tate Rink in 2006, and ownership connections to the Army make the Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights strong candidates for a potential outdoor game there.American-born players taking part in the game at Navy said they were honored to get the opportunity. Told of the NHL's future plans to attempt games at Army and Air Force, Maple Leafs defenseman Ron Hainsey called it ''a great road for us to go down.''''It's a nice recognition and a little partnership almost that we're able to play here,'' American-born Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen said. ''I think means different things to different people. As a country, it means a lot, especially the Americans that play in the league and our fans.''The NHL has 24 American- and seven Canadian-based teams and is made up of about 49 percent Canadian-born players. Members of the Canadian Armed Forces took part in pregame ceremonies with the Maple Leafs, and Daly said involving a team from north of the 48th parallel was a conscious decision that didn't meet any resistance.''I think North American forces are united,'' Daly said. ''I think there's a real appreciation for the military wherever you are, north or south of the border. While it was something we certainly thought about, it certainly hasn't been something that's been an obstacle at all.''When Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, native Mike Babcock moved to Spokane, Washington, he recalled the deep connections to the military from those stationed at nearby Fairchild Air Force Base or just residents who served or knew someone who was in the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marine Corps. So he's very attuned to the comparisons and contrasts for the military in the United States and Canada.''When you talk to families in the U.S., there seems to be someone in every family that's had someone in the family,'' the Maple Leafs' coach said. ''When you do it in Canada, we don't have as big a military, so we haven't had that same thing. That doesn't mean we don't have tons of people doing a really good job and doing everything they can.''Babcock said he didn't know how the NHL would make an outdoor game work at a place like the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, and Daly acknowledged the service academies are different in the United States. They also provide the kind of outdoor venues that fit hockey well.''It's just a different atmosphere,'' Capitals defenseman John Carlson said before playing at 34,000-seat Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. I think football stadiums and baseball stadiums, which I've played in, they're amazing. But to have a kind of unique atmosphere and history to this place and from a fan's point of view the sightlines and all that are way better at a place like this than a 60,000-seat football field.''Being part of a historic atmosphere is one thing players, American and otherwise, cited as an added value to this Stadium Series game.''As Americans, I'm sure if you're from a different country, it probably doesn't quite feel that way, but for us it does feel really special,'' Capitals right winger T.J. Oshie said. ''It's great for the NHL, it's great for hockey and it's great for the Americans that are able to play in the games''

  4. trottier added a post in a topic: Kase scores as Ducks knock off Blackhawks, 32

The Anaheim Ducks are in the playoff hunt heading into the final part of the season despite a couple of injuries to key players throughout the year.Without Adam Henrique, they would be in major trouble.Henrique snapped a tie with his 18th goal 834 into the third period, and the Ducks handed the Chicago Blackhawks their eighth straight loss with a 3-2 victory on Thursday night.Article continues below .. thought the guys did a great job sticking with it in the third, even when we were under pressure, Henrique said. A lot of big blocked shots and a lot of big plays that usually get overlooked, but are big plays for the win.The 28-year-old Henrique has 14 goals, including six game-winners, and eight assists in 34 games since he was acquired in a Nov. 30 trade with New Jersey. He has adjusted to a couple different roles as injured players have returned to the Ducks. He a real smart player and we feel very, very fortunate to have him, coach Randy Carlyle said.Ondrej Kase had a goal and two assists and John Gibson made 42 saves as Anaheim improved to 1-1 on a four-game trip. Nick Ritchie added a goal and an assist. The Ducks had dropped two in a row and four of six, hurting their playoff positioning as they try to secure a postseason spot in the Western Conference. It was huge win for us, Ritchie said. Obviously not a perfect game, but well take the two points.Kase found a wide-open Henrique in front, and he beat Anton Forsberg to lift Anaheim to a 3-2 lead. Chicago pulled Forsberg for an extra attacker with about 215 left, but Gibson made a great stop on Brandon Saad to help the Ducks hold on during the frantic final minutes Keith scored his first goal of the season for last-place Chicago , which has lost seven in a row at home. Saad also snapped a long scoring drought, and Forsberg made 29 stops.I think we just made too many mistakes, Saad said. We had some good minutes, but were giving up too many chances, breakaways, things like that. The eight-game slide for the once-mighty Blackhawks is their longest losing streak since they dropped nine in a row in early 2012 Steve Larmer Jersey. It just seems like it the way it been going. If we give up a goal, it seems we get down on ourselves or something, I dont know, Keith said. It kind of snowballs. There where we kind of have to dig in and bear down and battle a little bit harder.Chicago jumped in front on its fourth power play of the game. With Cam Fowler in the penalty box for tripping Alex DeBrincat, Keith drove a long slap shot by a screened Gibson on the glove side 145 into the second period. It was the first goal for Keith since March 16 at Ottawa. The two-time Norris Trophy winner has just 26 points after he had six goals and 47 assists last season.Saad then finished off a pretty give-and-go with Vinnie Hinostroza at 912, tapping it in at the net for his 14th of the season. Saad had no goals and one assist in his previous 16 games Anaheim responded with goals on back-to-back shots midway through the period. Ritchie put a backhander into the upper corner on Forsberg glove side 41 seconds after Saad scored, and Kase finished off a breakaway with another nice backhander for the tying goal at 1218.Chicago got another power play after Blackhawks forward Ryan Hartman creased Jakob Silfverberg with a big hit with about two minutes left in the second, prompting Anaheim Josh Manson to start a fight with Hartman. But the Ducks killed it off, part of a 1-for-5 night with the man advantage for the Blackhawks.NOTES Chicago recalled G Jean-Francois Berube from Rockford of AHL and assigned goalie Jeff Glass to its top minor league affiliate.

  5. trottier added a post in a topic: Oilers face Avalanche, with Sharks in range

DENVER The Edmonton Oilers, winners of five Stanley Cup championships and runners-up two other times, produced the most dynamic team in NHL history 30 years ago. What is happening with them this year brings back memories of that Wayne Gretzky-led team Carl Soderberg Jersey. The Oilers, after years of picking at the top of the draft, are playoff contenders looking to add to their history. After a 4-3 loss at Anaheim on Wednesday in a Pacific Division battle, Edmonton has 87 points with nine games left in the season.Article continues below ... There is no time for Edmonton to wallow in the defeat to the Ducks. A matchup against the lowly Colorado Avalanche is on tap Thursday night at Pepsi Center and a chance to put pressure on the first-place San Jose Sharks, who sit just four points ahead of the third-place Oilers in the Pacific. Dont expect Edmonton to overlook Colorado, which is last in the NHL with 43 points. The Avalanche have played better lately and could derail the Oilers hopes for their first division title since 1987 John Wensink Jersey. This time of year, there isnt a casual night, Edmonton coach Todd McLellan told NHL on Wednesday. The Oilers are led by 20-year-old sensation Connor McDavid, who has been battling Pittsburgh superstar Sidney Crosby for the scoring lead in the NHL all season. McDavid has a league-best 85 points and 59 assists. The bright spot for the Avalanche is they probably wont have to face Cam Talbot, one of the hottest goaltenders in the league. Talbot started his 13th consecutive game Wednesday, facing the Ducks after posting consecutive shutouts against Vancouver and Los Angeles. He went 148 minutes, 18 seconds before Patrick Eaves beat him in the first period to break the streak. Colorado likely will face backup Laurent Brossoit, who relieved Talbot midway through Wednesday game. The Avalanche have struggled to score this season, no matter who has been in net; they have a league-low 140 goals, an average of 1.94 per game. They have been shut out 12 times, which ties the franchise record. While Colorado was eliminated from playoff contention almost two weeks ago, facing teams with something to play for has helped the Avalanche stay focused. It doesnt hurt our team, that for sure, to be playing hungry teams, coach Jared Bednar told HockeyBuzz. Every game a challenge for us and we need to find ways to work through them and secure some points and see some growth in our team. Were working towards something, and it not necessarily just this season. Weve got some young guys in the lineup that have come up and done a real nice job for us. It growth for them and it trying to find some chemistry with some of the guys that we know are coming back Patrik Nemeth Jersey. Colorado young core has not been as productive as Edmonton, and it led to talk that it would deal some of them before the trading deadline. The Avalanche made some minor deals but have started to look at the future, with center J.T. Compher and defenseman Anton Lindholm being recalled recently. For Edmonton, the future is now. The Oilers are 15 games over .500 for the first time in 29 years, but they dont want to settle for just making the playoffs. They are 12 points ahead of Los Angeles, which is the first team out of the postseason in the Western Conference standings. We have to keep climbing in the standings and getting away from teams, forward Patrick Maroon told The Edmonton Sun.
